Cross-sell (Frequently Bought Together)

Cross-sell shows other products that go with the product a shopper is looking at, or with what's in their cart. For example, a shopper looking at an iced latte sees "Frequently bought together: Croissant, Oat Milk". The goal is a bigger basket per order without giving a discount.

You can pick the matching products yourself (curated), let Etalasse suggest them from your order history (automatic), or both.

New feature

Cross-sell launches with this release. Screens may differ slightly from the description below, but they work the same way.

What shoppers see

WhereRail titleWhat's in it
Product page, under the reviews and before "Related products""Frequently bought together", "Complete the look", or "Upgrade options"The product's curated products, then automatic pairs
Cart page, under the items"Complete your order"Curated products and automatic pairs of the items in the cart, then products from the same category
  • Each card shows the product's photo, name, price and rating. Your short label (for example "Great with morning coffee") shows on curated product cards.
  • A product with no variants and no add-ons can be added to the cart with one tap. A product that needs a choice first (variants, add-ons, or Booking and Rental shops) opens its product page.
  • Inactive, deleted and sold-out products are not shown. As soon as a product is back in stock, it shows again.
  • Products already in the cart are not offered again in the cart.
  • If nothing matches, the rail doesn't show at all.

No bundle discount. Cross-sell never changes a price. The price shown is the product's current price, including any active price rule, and the cart prices items as usual. For discounts, use coupons or flash sales.

Cross-sell is also different from add-ons. An add-on is an option inside one item (an extra shot, a sauce). A cross-sell product is a separate product that goes into the cart as its own line.

You can use both together. Many shops start by curating a few best sellers and let automatic pairs fill in the rest.

Set up curated products

Open a product's edit form and scroll to the Cross-sell section under add-ons.

  1. Tap Add product and pick the matching product.
  2. Choose the link type:
    • Bought together (default): products people usually buy together.
    • Complete the look: finishes a set, such as a top with trousers, or a full meal.
    • Upgrade: a bigger or better option. It shows on the product page with an "Upgrade" badge, but not in the cart, because an upgrade replaces an item rather than completing the order.
  3. Add a short label if you like (up to 40 characters), such as "Great with morning coffee". A label can't carry a price or discount.
  4. Set the order by dragging (web) or with the up and down buttons (phone). This is the display order.
  5. Save.

A product can have up to 20 curated products. The product itself can't be picked, and each product only once. Curated products that are sold out or inactive are marked "Sold out" or "Inactive" in the form and hidden from shoppers until they're available again.

The type of the first link in your list sets the rail title on the product page. For example, if the first curated product is Complete the look, the title is "Complete the look".

How automatic pairs are worked out

Every night at about 02:40 WIB, Etalasse reads your shop's orders and looks for products that are often bought in the same order:

  1. Orders that count: orders from the last 180 days that are paid, on delivery, or delivered, from the POS, the online store and the Dashboard alike. Canceled, expired, unpaid and fully refunded orders don't count. An item refunded in full inside an order doesn't count either. Variants count as their parent product.

  2. Baskets that count: only orders with 2 to 50 different products. A one-product order has no pairs. Very large orders (stock-ups or wholesale) would pair everything with everything, so they're skipped.

  3. How often they're bought together: for each pair A and B, Etalasse counts the orders that contain both, and what share of A's buyers also bought B. It also checks that B turns up with A more often than in an average order, so a product that's in every order anyway (such as a shopping bag) isn't paired with everything.

  4. A filter against coincidences, scaled to how many orders the shop had in 180 days:

Orders in 180 daysBought together at leastMust beat the average order?
    Under 1001 orderNo
    100–9992 ordersYes
    1,000 or more3 ordersYes
  5. Ranking: for each product, pairs are ranked by how often they were bought together. Up to 20 pairs are kept per product.

A new shop, or one without orders of several products, has no automatic pairs yet. They appear on their own once customers start buying several products at once. Until then, use curated products.

Suggestions from orders

The Cross-sell section of the product form has a Suggested from orders block. It lists the product's automatic pairs, for example "Bought together in 12 orders · 30% of buyers". Tap Pin to turn one into a curated product, so you can set its position, type and label. Pinned suggestions are marked "Linked".

The block also shows when pairs were last worked out. Tap Refresh now to recalculate without waiting for the night, at most once every 10 minutes.

Cross-sell results

The same page shows results for the last 7, 30 or 90 days:

  • Clicks: products opened from a cross-sell rail.
  • Adds to cart: products from a rail added to the cart, either with quick add or on their product page within 30 minutes of the click.
  • Orders and Revenue: paid online store orders, in the same visit, that contain that product, with the value of that item's line.

Results are split by placement (product page or cart), with the top cross-sell products, and below that the list of products that have curated products.

These numbers come from Storefront Analytics, so POS orders and browsers with Do-Not-Track switched on aren't counted. How often a rail was shown isn't recorded, so there is no click-through rate.

Plans and roles

  • Cross-sell is available from the Growth plan. See Billing & Plans.
  • On the Free plan you can still open the Cross-sell page and the Cross-sell section of the product form to see suggestions from your orders, but you can't save, and the online store shows no cross-sell rails.
  • If your plan goes down, rails stop showing on the online store. Curated products stay saved and show again when you upgrade. You can still remove links.
  • Only the Owner and Admin can open cross-sell. Cashiers can't see it.

Tips

  • Start with your 10 best sellers: give each 2–4 matches that make sense.
  • Pin suggestions with a high share of buyers. It shows how often buyers of the product also bought the match.
  • Use Upgrade for a bigger size or a premium version, not for add-on products.
  • Keep labels short and useful, such as "Refill", "Serves 2" or "Matching set".
  • Check cross-sell results monthly. Replace curated products that get clicks but rarely get added to the cart.
